自上世纪90年代初开始商用化以来,锂离子电池的使用越来越广泛。如今,从笔记本电脑、移动电话到电动汽车、储能设备,锂离子电池几乎无处不在。在达到电池使用的寿命后,随之而来的,是废弃锂离子电池数量以惊人的速度增加。有研究预测,到2030年,全球报废的锂离子电池将达到1100万吨以上。

Euro (in Czech) – Antičínský detox za 340 miliard. USA rozjíždějí obří projekt recyklace baterií

Americké ministerstvo energetiky schválilo projekt v hodnotě 15 miliard dolarů (340 miliard korun) na výzkum a vývoj recyklace lithium-iontových baterií. Odůvodňuje to národní bezpečností, zejména kvůli sporům s Čínou, jež je ve výrobě a druhotném zpracování akumulátorů napřed. Spojené státy chtějí touto iniciativou snížit závislost země na dovozu lithia, kobaltu, niklu a grafitu.
